TSS: Ogun cannot pay more than 15%

Ogun State government has said it cannot pay more than 15 per cent of the 27.5 per cent  peculiar allowance being demanded by teachers in the state.

It will be recalled that teachers in the state, under the aegis of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), grounded academic activities in the state public primary schools over the failure of government to implement the 27.5 per cent Teachers’ Salary Scale (TSS).

The state chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), which disowned NUT at the commencement of the strike, had earlier hinted that it had agreed to government’s proposed 15 per cent for teachers in secondary schools.

The state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr Segun Odubela, who spoke to newsmen at the weekend, maintained that government was still negotiating with the NUT leadership but could not afford to pay the 27.5 per cent being demanded by the union.

The commissioner added that the teachers would begin to enjoy the 15 per cent by the end of July, 2013 only if they agreed to government’s stand.
