MTN Foundation assists 300 widows in Nigeria


MTN Foundation, the corporate social investment vehicle of MTN Nigeria, said it has empowered 300 widows economically, even as it partnered with the Ministry of Women Affairs to commemorate the first-ever International Widows’ Day in Nigeria.
The 300 individuals were the beneficiary of the foundation’s Widows Empowerment Scheme through which it is providing training an tools of trade for select widows in the six geo-political zones of Nigeria. Speaking at après conference, MTN Foundation Director, Mr. Akinwale Goodluck, described MNF widow scheme as an initiative aimed at providing business management skills and equipment support for widows in the country to improve their living conditions.
Represented by represented by the Executive Secretary of the Foundation, Ms Nonny Ugbona, Gooluck said, “Economic empowerment of women, including widows, is a critical factors in the eradication of poverty in Nigeria, because when women are empowered, the standard of living of the entire family is improved, “ he said,.
He pointed out that a recent United Nations study estimated that 115 million widows live in extreme poverty worldwide along with their children. He said the such a report and many suchlike, prompted the Foundation to seek was of assisting widows.
