Armed robbers kill 5 vigilance group members in Ogun

Robbers numbering about 20, in the early hours of Saturday, killed five members of the Ogun State Vigilance Service, at a petrol station in Onihale area in Ifo axis of the state.

The gang, Sunday Tribune learnt, invaded the petrol station premises in an unregistered vehicle at about 2 a.m. and caught the victims who were said to be providing security for the station unawares.

It was learnt that the gang were reported to be specialists in robbing financial and other allied institutions, as they were said to have engaged men of the State Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in a gun duel while the operation lasted.

The identity of three of the victims were unknown at the time of filing this report, while the remains of two victims identified as Nurudeen Kasali and one Akeem, were committed to mother earth on Saturday afternoon, in the area.

The Ogun State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident, but said that only two people were killed.

Adejobi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said that the robbers operated with sophisticated weapons, adding that some of the robbers escaped  with gunshot injuries, as they were engaged by the police.
 
The PPRO said the robbers abandoned the vehicle and items such as one pump action gun, two double barrel guns, one phoenix pistol, five empty magazines of AK 47 rifle, a sledge hammer as well as three cars.
He added that 250 expended shell of AK 47 rifle were recovered from the robbery scene, just as the command made passionate appeal to all orthodox and traditional medical  practitioners to report to the police in case anyone approached them to treat gunshot wounds.
