Ogun traditional rulers seek partnership with govt

Traditional rulers in Ogun State have solicited  partnership with government  in the appointment, upgrading  and disciplining of  members of the state  council of obas.
The Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona,  made the plea  in Abeokuta  at a stakeholder’s forum organised by the Ogun State House of Assembly on a  bill to amend the State Council of  Obas’ Law 2006.
Adetona, who was represented  by the  Dagburewe of Idowa, Ijebuland, Oba Yinusa Adekoya, said  paramount rulers of the four divisions in the state should be involved in decisions affecting the traditional institution.
“Before any decision is taken by the executive, the paramount rulers must be informed because they  know the history and locality of all Obas  in the  divisions,’’ he said.
The Akarigbo of Remoland, Oba Adeniyi Sonariwo,   represented by  the Odofin of Sanyindo, Sagamu, Oba Lasisi Gisanrin, said  there was urgent need for the amendment of the council’s law.
Sonariwo commended  Governor Ibikunle Amosun for a well drafted  bill, saying that the amendment was timely.
The traditional ruler said that the opinions of the traditional rulers would help to avoid the mistakes made by previous administrations.
Earlier, the Speaker of  Ogun Assembly, Mr Suraj Adekunbi, had assured stakeholders that the bill would guarantee harmony and peaceful succession through rotation.
He added that it would also guarantee hierarchy in the ascension to leadership of the traditional councils.
“The bill will equally provide an avenue for our traditional fathers to have a say in the governance of the state,’’ he said.
