LAGOS — The House of Representatives Committee on Works, yesterday, asked a contractor, Impresit Bakolori Plc, that abandoned Ikorodu-Sagamu road for two years to activate the contractual agreements or face the wrath of the law.
Chairman of the Committee, Ogbuefi Ozomgbachi, said this during an inspection of the road.
Ozombgachi, who led a 16-member team to inspect South West federal roads, said the era of abandoned contracts had come to an end as it would no longer be condoned in Nigeria.
He told the Managing Director of the contracting firm, Mr Emilio Magoni, that the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, asked the team to inspect this very important road, based on a petition written by the community dwellers.
He said: “You said you abandoned this project because of management crisis. We won’t take that reason from you. Your company must complete this project immediately because you have delayed the good people of this area who petitioned our speaker.”
Apparently short of words, all Mr Magoni, the contractor could say was that he was not aware of what led to the management crisis but promised that his firm would complete the road as soon as possible.
Ozomgbachi also wanted companies in the country to execute Federal Government contracts with a sense of obligation to Nigerians.
The inspection by the committee was part of its oversight functions on all on-going federal road projects in the South-West.
The Ikorodu-Sagamu road rehabilitation contract was awarded in 2009 to Impresit Bakolori at the cost of over N3.3 billion but was abandoned a year later after the company received over N687 million mobilisation.
The completion date of the contract had elapsed since May 17, 2011, and this did not go down well with members of the committee.
The company, which returned to site last month, promised to complete the project latest April next year.
Members of the committee on arrival in Lagos, had earlier inspected the on-going rehabilitation of access road to Apapa Tin Can Island Port, NNPC Depot Atlas Cove in Lagos, as well as Apapa-Oshodi expressway.
The coring and rebound hammer tests conducted on the completed sections met the required specifications.
