Amosun: No Punishment for Striking Teachers

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun has said that there would be no sanction for members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in the state who stayed away from classes during the three weeks strike which was called off on Friday.
The governor, who gave this assurance shortly after the leadership of the union accepted 15 per cent out of the 27.5 per cent being agitated for, also apologized to the entire state on behalf of the union and government.
Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in the state, Comrade Ambali Akeem, said that the strike followed a directive from the union's national headquarters.
Ambali said the NLC had to prevail on the NUT to suspend the strike because of its implication on the school system.
Chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers, in the state, Comrade Dare Ilekoye, who tendered an apology to the state government on behalf of the teachers said, "This strike was prolonged because there was communication gap between the government and the NUT.
"We later learnt that the governor has long approved 15 per cent peculiar allowance through the Joint Negotiating Committee."
