Ogun PDP factions turn Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to battleground

The troubled Ogun State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Friday turned a ceremony to flag-off the reconstruction of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to a tussle for relevance.
The two factions, supporters of the PDP money bag, Buruji Kashamu, and suspended former governor, Gbenga Daniel, came to the venue of the flag-off ceremony at the Sagamu Interchange armed with banners proclaiming their affiliations.
The ceremony, which was attended by the president, Goodluck Jonathan, and thousands of PDP supporters was filled with chants from the factions who tried to out-do each other, calling out the names of and singing the praises of their leaders. The Daniel supporters’ chants of “OGD” was equally countered by praise-singing from the Kashamu faction.
Mr. Daniel, who was at the occasion, accompanied by the former Minister for Steel, Sarafa Ishola, responded to his loyalists with repeated  wave of hands as did Mr. Kashamu to his supporters.
The fully-armed security operatives at the ceremony, however, prevented any melee by restraining the crowd to the side of the road and preventing them from getting into the main venue of the flag-off.
When approached by journalists for comments on the action of his supporters, Mr. Daniel declared it was all politicking and refused further comment.
